Which flowers should you give your mother on Mother's Day?

In honor of Mother's Day that just passed this May 10th, we're dedicating this month's post to Mother's Day gifts and flowers. It's safe to say that your mother will be happy to receive any type of flowers you give her, is there a perfect flower for your mother? This is what we think:

Roses: For a long time, roses have been associated with motherhood. This timeless flower provides an opportunity to never go wrong. Your mother will always appreciate a rose.

Lilacs: lilacs are also a timeless option and are known to symbolize love. This is a great symbol of the love between a mother and child.

Orchids: orchids symbolize fertility and many children. This in essence is what make a mother just that-- a woman that has the ability to bare children.

Irises: these flowers are known to show affection and warmth. They also come in a variety of colors which can give your mother some quirky fun for Mother's Day.

Tulips: tulips are associated with new life and spring. They are just gorgeous an also come in many pastel-like colors that your mother will love.

These flowers are also great gift ideas for your mother on any occasion. Mothers should not only be appreciated on Mother's Day, but every day of the year. Call us if you need more help or information on landscaping or gardening!

How to Maintain a Lawn Sprinkler System

If you have invested in a lawn sprinkler system, you know that they aren't cheap. It is only logical that you would want to protect your investment. Maintaining your sprinkler system is fairly easy since it only requires routine maintenance and seasonal check-up which you can really do yourself. We also recommend checking if the city you live in has an annual professional test requirement. In the event that it does, we recommend setting this up during the month of your birthday in order to help you remember.

The following tips will help you maintain your sprinkler system without breaking the bank or having to hire outside help:

  • Inspect the sprinklers frequently for any broken sprinkler heads. Replace them if necessary.
  • Run the system and place tin cans in order to gauge how much water is being received by your lawn. If for any reason there is low flow, check the sprinkler heads for cracks. You can also clean them by changing the filters.
  • Adjust the sprinkler heads so that they don't water the sidewalk or go into your neighbor's yard. Don't step on them. Adjustments should always be made with a screwdriver.
  • Drain the entire system before winter hits to avoid freeze damage.
  • Check the controller if power is lost. This usually means that the controller needs to be reset.
If you would like to know more information on how to maintain a sprinkler system or need landscaping services, please feel free to contact us. As our customer, you are our first priority. Happy Gardening!

How to save a plant:

Caring for plants require time and proper technique. It can happen sometimes that we may forget to water the plant or may place it in an area where it does not get enough sunlight. In the event that your plant does begin to wilt or die, we have come up with the following tips to help nurse it back to life:
  1. Remove dead leaves from the plant: Trim away all dead leaves as these will not return back to life. You can use scissors or pruning sheers. Remember to leave any buds, even if they look unhealthy.
  2. Consider repotting: Find out if the pot has become too small for the plant or if the pot is not in great condition to hold the plant. If you find that this is the case, repot it.
  3. Check humidity levels in the home: Plants like humidity. Be sure that your home is humid enough to have plants.
  4. Control sunlight: Be sure the plant it in a place where it gets some sunlight, but also somewhere that has some shade as well. Constant sunlight can also dry out the plant.

Throw it over a small bush in your garden and viola! You've got a home-made ghost to BOO your trick-or-treaters with.
  2. Nothing works better than the dollar store! The best decorations aren't always the most expensive and there's lots you can get at the dollar store. From window stickers, to inexpensive spider webs, let your mind go wild.
  3. Set the mood with a jack o' lantern: Even if your front door has nothing else but a carved pumpkin, this is enough to set the mood. Turn the lights our and just leave the pumpkin lit with a tea-light candle.
There are many other fun Halloween ideas all over the internet. Remember, anything you use this Halloween can easily be reused next year! Gonzalez Landscaping wishes you a happy and safe Halloween!

How to organize plants in my garden...

Believe it or not gardens can reflect many traits of our personality. Since there are many options of plants and flowers and ways to organize them, you can choose the ones you like the most and make your landscape a work of art. There are several things to take into consideration when organizing the plants in your garden so they stay fresh and full of life:

• Start with the basics. Good soil preparation is the key for a healthy looking garden.
• Try to match the colors and properties of the flowers you mix.
• Use flowers and plants with similar needs: water, sun and soil conditions so they all maintain a nice appearance.
• Analyze the surroundings. Plant your flowers in an appropriate place for them to grow, if you plant them near mature trees its roots will absorb the nutrients and provide shade making it difficult for flowers to blossom.
• Look for places to create new flower beds, borders or islands in a place where they look great and get the nutrients they need.
• Be aware of the style and architecture of your home. Also the background for the landscape.
• Keep in mind the size of your yard available for gardening. Try to use appropriate plants for each size so none of them provide shade or restrict airflow to the others. You can call Gonzalez Plant and Tree services to help achieve the garden of your dreams; we will make sure to exceed your expectations with a garden that reflects your personality and taste.

How do I keep my grass green during the summer?

Coping with the summer heat can be hard work, not just for us but also for our garden. Keeping our garden green during the summer can be more challenging but it is certainly not impossible. At Gonzalez Landscaping and tree services we provide the best services for your grass, lawn or yard and we would like to share with you some tips to keep your grass green during the summertime.
  • Water deeply but infrequently: set your irrigation system or if you do it yourself, schedule to water your grass more deeply during the summer. The heat will absorb this water more quickly so you need to make it abundant. Don't do shallow watering every day, it is preferred to water with lots of water less frequently.
  • Feed your grass every 6-8 weeks. A well fed grass grows thicker which cools the soil and crowds out weeds.
  • In the summer, you can mow the lawn a little higher; this way the soil will be more protected and moist from the intense heat.
  • Water early in the morning, this way you reduce the evaporation water waste.
  • Reseed and renovate on dry or old patches. Some spots may have grown a variety that can't handle heat. You can replace them with heat friendly grass.
Call our professional landscapers at Gonzalez Landscaping and tree services to have a beautiful grass or garden all year long. We will provide the best care and tips for the garden of your dreams!

How to keep your garden looking green and healthy!

Having a green, fresh and lush garden is an incredible way to make your home look beautiful. Some people love to spend hours maintaining the yard or garden but others simply do not have the time.  You can keep your grass looking healthy and green without having to make much effort; enjoy the benefits with a small amount of work…How?
  • Use a good and appropriate fertilizer for your grass type. Only use it once a year (in the Fall is a good time to do it)
  • Buy a weed killer that works for your grass.
  • Spread a mild insect killer to eliminate or prevent bugs or pests to deteriorate your grass.
  • Use a sprinkler/irrigation system: this way you don´t need to water them every day and they will automatically stay fresh and healthy.
  • Mow your lawn at the highest setting on your mower (about 3 ½ - 4 inches). It is healthier looking grass when it´s a little taller because weed is harder to grow, the soil stays cooler and moist for a longer time, and it helps create more nutrients.
  • Let the grass clippings stay in the grass, these turn into compost useful for the soil.
It is always recommendable to call a professional at least once a year to review your lawn and let you know if anything else is needed. If you are having problems with your garden or would like to create a beautiful landscape on your home call Gonzalez Landscaping & Tree Service and we will work with you to create the garden of your dreams!

The Magic of a Great Looking Lawn with Sod Grass

We all want to live in home with a beautiful, green lawn. Sometimes, naturally planted seed grass takes a lot of time to blossom and get the right color and texture. However, now you can get a natural looking lawn with sod grass!

Sod grass is basically grass that has been previously planted and comes ready to build in your own yard. It is sold in sections and comes with its own soil held together by roots, giving you natural grass almost instantly! This technique is also recommended because it is more abundant, fertile and grows more evenly.

If you are struggling between seed or sod, you may want to consider the time and cost it takes to perfect each technique. Sod takes much less time to install than seed, get results more quickly and you can install it any time of the year.

With Gonzalez Landscaping and Tree services you will have the best lawn in town with very competitive prices. We offer the best service; have experienced contractors and extremely high quality grass. Call us today for your estimate!

All You Need to Know about Sod Grass

If you are shifting to a new house or planning to give a new look to your current one, the installation of a brand new Sod is definitely something you should consider in order to give it a greener look.

If you love greenery and weed free lawns that are low maintenance, lawns which you are able to grow in a few days and that look as great as the fields of Switzerland then the installation of Sod is definitely something worth taking into consideration.

You must decide the exact size of the lawn and the amount of sod you will need.
You must check both the type and the quality of soil that exists in your lawn

Before getting a sod installation, you must remove any weeds that grow in the soil.

Ensure that there is proper draining for water.

Check if the lawn will get proper sunlight

Make sure that you clear the whole area and grade your soil before sod installation.

After taking into consideration all these factors, you must contact a competent Sod fabricant and let him know that you, in fact, have all these conditions ready beforehand. This will help him prepare a Sod that is best suited to the conditions and that will grow without any hindrance. Moreover, buying directly from the gardeners/makers is very beneficial, as you’ll remove any middlemen and pay a lower rate for every Sod grass installation that you’ve planned.

For example, Sods like Kentucky bluegrass, annual/perennial fescues and ryegrass are mostly suited for winter climate and will not show any signs of fertility in either warm or dry climates.
All other varieties, such as Bermuda, Carpet, St. Augustine, Centipede, etc; are made for warmer climates. If you live near the beach, then you can buy the very exquisite Bahia variety, which is happens to be exclusively suited to this type of climate

Here at Gonzalez Landscaping & Tree Services
we not only possess the “Know how” in all related matters to landscaping, but we are also fully capable of addressing your needs in regards to Sod installments and maintenance.

Organize Your Ideas with a Planting Plan

    Bookmark and Share

A planting plan doesn’t have to be complicated; it can help you to organize your ideas and make decisions on how many plants you are going to need.

Figuring out the cost of your plants

If you are able to buy large trees and shrubs you will be able to have an instant garden; if you can’t afford them then you will need patience to grow young plants. For instance, Perennials can bloom and reach their maximum height in the first couple of years, so don’t spend money on big plants. Besides, it will be very interesting to see them grow as time goes by.

Gonzalez Landscaping and Tree Service in Agoura Hills, CA can help you choose the best plants at a great price. We are very experienced so we can offer our services along with great materials at a lower cost than most landscapers.

    Organizing your Plants

Many people get excited and try to cram too much into a small space, but overcrowded plants tend to be unhealthy, so always think about what their final spreads will be when drawing up your plan. The best way to make your plants look fuller is to put them all in a group together.

    • If you group plants in the shape of a sausage (which works well for cottage and prairie styles), or in triangle shapes they will look better and you will be able to create harmony among disparate groups.
    • When you place the occasional plant away from its group it will look like it grew naturally.
    • In order to create contrast with natural plantings elsewhere do a formal planting design near the house.
    • Gonzalez Landscaping and Tree Service in Thousand Oaks, CA usually plants trees at a good distance from your property to prevent the ground from sinking, and to give them enough space to mature.

    Visualize your ideas

At Gonzalez Landscaping and Tree Service in Agoura Hills, CA we believe you should try to visualize a planting plan. If you are doing a small garden you can sketch the view from an upstairs’ window. Feel free to let your imagination run wild and don’t worry too much about being accurate at this stage.

    • Next, look at all the views from the house at ground level and think if you want your plants to frame, enhance, or block them.
    • Be sure to scope out the field, decide where the plants are going to be. You can place these on your drawing as simple shapes.

You should also take photographs as well, that way you can refer to them when you draw your plan. If you already have a pretty good idea of what you want, you can sketch your ideas directly onto the photographs; if not; work on a sheet of tracing paper laid on top. These rough sketches will help to prepare a more organized planting plan.

The Last Draft Of Your Planting Plan

If you are preparing a plan for your own use you will not need fancy graphics, if you need help Gonzalez Landscaping and Tree Service in Agoura Hills can give you ideas that will produce a beautiful landscape that you can be proud of.

    • On the last draft of your plan, map out the sections that you would like to plant, and then add the plants you want.
    • To help you decide where trees, plants or shrubs will be, sketch circles to scale.
    • So you are able to see how dense your planting will be, mark out a square meter on the ground and calculate plant spacing for different species using their final spreads. Make a note of them for future reference.
    • You can design your plan on graph paper. When choosing the scale, take into account how big the beds or borders are going to be. A scale of 1:50 or 1:20 is appropriate for an intricate plan.
    • Also, make sure you trace your drawing to develop a nice, complete design. Make two versions: a drawing to keep for yourself and the other version that you can use when you are going to plant. It would be nice if you laminate your last draft to protect it from the weather.

If you want a garden that not only looks beautiful but it brings harmony to the overall landscape of your property please call us at (805) 573 0809

Is there a charge for estimates?*

No, we do not charge for estimates of any maintenance services or landscape work. We evaluate the project and give you a free of charge estimate of what it could cost.

What does the term landscaping include?

When we talk about landscaping we refer to all the improvement performed in the outside of your home. Everything on your property that stands outside is part of its landscaping. A property and its landscape should be in harmony and synchronize with each other, which is where the art of landscaping designs begins.

Is it viable to hire a professional landscaper to work on my landscape or can I do the work myself?

Some work can be done by yourself if you have the time, budget and skills. But other projects demand higher training and professionalism; in this case you will need to hire a landscaper. If the work that needs to be done requires not only skills, but special tools or machinery, don’t try to save money by trying to do it yourself, it will actually cost you more in the long run.

Are there other practical options to avoid mowing lawns?

Yes, there are other alternatives rather than having to mow your lawn. We install amazing ground covers that look very beautiful in any property; you can also considerate flower beds, wider walkways, among others.

Landscaping Services for a Water-Saving California!

    Bookmark and Share

    Thousand Oaks landscaping
Have you heard the news? California is expecting a severe drought this year. The water reserve levels for this year are severely impacted by record dry conditions, but there are ways reduce water usage without sacrificing the beauty of a garden. Our Thousand Oaks landscapers share some useful information on how to save water and have a beautiful garden at the same time!

    Water Wise Plants

Having native plants in your garden will reduce the use of water. In addition to being very beautiful, local plants are used to the weather conditions. Some of the native plants of North and South California that you can enjoy in your garden are: Abyssinian Acacia, Acapulco Night Hybrid Daylily, Aeonium, African Boxwood, African Daisy, African Queen Butterfly Bush, African Sumac, Alkali Sacaton, All That Jazz Bearded Iris, Allan Bloom Hybrid, Allen Chickering Cleveland Sage, Adam's Needle.

At Gonzalez Landscaping & Tree Service we not only do business, we care for our environment and provide our clients with convenient and friendly solutions for their garden. We take pride in our years of experience and in our highly qualified garden Thousand Oaks landscapers to create beautiful surroundings, inspired landscape designs and personalized environments.

Tips for Water Saving Landscaping in your Garden:
    • Avoid using turf grass in your garden, the thirstiest plant of all.
    • Categorize your plants, placing the ones that use about the same amount of water together.
    • Water your garden when needed and do it preferably at night, when evaporation is lower and air is calmer.
    • Keep an optimum soil for your garden. Use compost to improve the quality of the soil; organic matter is always good for your garden.
    • Reduce the soil and air temperature by planting trees.
    • If you have plants in containers, group them in a way that the bigger ones can give some shadow to the smaller ones. And try to place your container plants in the deepest shade they can tolerate.

With these tips you can improve the conditions of your garden and switch to a more environment friendly one. Remember that at Gonzalez Landscaping & Tree Service, we have highly qualified and experienced Thousand Oaks landscapers that can help you achieve this goal!
